River City Dancers are CASUAL in July and August. |
|
What about
"real" Square Dance clothes??
|
Are they required?
For most clubs, yes, but don't worry about them until you get
through enough lessons to know if you want to
continue this fun activity (we hope you
will!). For lessons, our only
recommendation is to wear
comfortable shoes that don't grip the floor too
much. In the hot months of July and
August, many clubs go "casual"...check
with someone first. Most
"in-club" functions like beach trips
or camping are casual.
"Theme" dances mean you can go as the
"theme" or traditional.

Are Square
Dance clothes expensive? Like any
clothing, they
can be, but don't have to be. A full,
crystal fabric petticoat like the one on the right
is likely to be your
most costly item, but less expensive ones are
available.. You'll likely be
surprised, however, at how reasonably priced
you'll find the majority of clothing in most square dance
shops. You can buy used clothing (we call
it "experienced") at many square dance shops
and many beginners jamborees and
conventions. There are also many online
stores...the two links on this page connect to
two local, Portland, Oregon sites. Of
course, those who sew have a real advantage, and
patterns are usually available at these shops.

What item of clothing is
most important? If you're an active
dancer, most of us would say good footwear!
Many men wear shoes now, but boots are always
acceptable. Soles should not grip...they
should slide. You may want to get extra
padding put on new soles by a shoemaker.
Unless you're a clogger, cleats are not
acceptable as they may tear up hardwood floors. |
